Why I read this book: This series is one of the first BDSM stories that I had read. It was the beginning of Brina’s writing career as well and I have learned so much from her. I’ve watched her grow her craft (and she seriously gets better with each book she writes) and have come to rely on the fact that she is always respectful of the trope she’s writing and informative. She doesn’t shy away from the messy parts that make her stories real for me.
Oh man… this is the last book of this series! I feel like I know Julien and Shane after all this time. I am instantly taken back to the first book and how the meeting between these two men went. It wasn’t smooth sailing by any means and their journey has been fraught with many challenges. In this story, one of the main challenges they face is having an interracial relationship. To be honest, I never even gave thought to that being a challenge that people still face. I guess that it’s just not an issue for me in that I’ve never had issue with the color of someone’s skin. I suppose though, as long as there are people who are jealous and racist and bigoted, there will be these senseless hardships as well as continuous dangers that people have to deal with on a daily basis. I really hope that one day this will only be something that’s revisited in stories and a non issue in real life. One of the things that I love most about Brina’s storytelling is that when she writes a BDSM scene she is very realistic and respectful. She makes a point to let us see how her characters feel about what they are experiencing. Both the Dom and the sub. She also teaches us that it can be an entire lifestyle for some and not so much for others, but it’s ok because while there are many things that the BDSM culture has in common, it is also very much tailored to the individuals and couples needs and wants.
Shane… I just love this young man! He’s still needy, he always will be because that’s just who he is. What I loved to see though, was that even when he got himself into trouble, he was quicker now than in the other books to see the errors that he was making. He’s done some growing up. I think that what impressed me most about this character is that for as needy and submissive as he is, he could still stay true to what he knew he needed and didn’t let people dictate who or how he could be. He will always be one of my favorite characters because he might be a little bit misdirected when on his own, but deep down, he has a good heart.
Julien… This is a character that I’ve also watched grow and that I’ve come to love. He started out, at least for me, as someone who I thought might just have his own interests at heart. I was happy to be proven wrong about that because he clearly knows what Shane needs and exactly how to deliver it. This character is a planner. He plans things right down to the tiniest details and since it’s what Shane needs, and he has his best interests at heart, they are absolutely perfect for each other. And I love the scenes that they do together. When these two men do a scene and they do so many different things, they sizzle!!! I’ve learned a great deal from their perspectives.
Thank you Brina Brady for these characters. They have touched me and I love them.

With their marriage on hold, Shane begins to stumble. All he wants is to be Julien’s husband but he just can’t seem to make the right choices when it comes to proving to Julien that he is his top priority.
To make matters harder, Shane is being forced to see the hatred in the world. Being in an interracial BDSM relationship isn’t welcomed by all. Most surprisingly from Shane’s so called friends and others from their small BDSM community.
Julien and Shane work together breaking through roadblocks to stay together as a black and white BDSM couple. No matter how hard Shane tries, he gets in his own way, with a little help from a couple of people actively working against them as a couple.
The couple fights against their enemies to stay together. When things get rough, they fight for their love.
This story is steamy hot, but it isn’t just a story of BDSM. It is a story of love and hate with a well-deserved HEA end to the series.
